Every year the IRS publishes statistics on tax revenue, the Tax Foundation has published a summary (warning PDF link) of this data.
This data shows a number of things I think are interesting, one of the most significant being those in the top 1% earn 21.2% of all income; they are also responsible for 39.4% of all taxes (The top 1% have a income of $364,657 or more).
The blog-o-sphere seems to be focused on another statistic that this report makes evident, namely that the top 1% pay more taxes than all of the bottom 90%, although on the surface feels more shocking its really expected since we have a progressive tax system.
The thing that weird’s me out about all of this is that you hear some of the would-be presidential candidates saying the rich need to pay their fare share when it comes to taxes, which implies they do not well these statistics certainly make me think that they pay more than their fare share but then again I am not trying to get elected
